Along with Ionia State Recreation Area, this project was created to offer central Michigan residents outdoor and water-based recreation in the "lake-less" region between Grand Rapids and the thumb area. ,, Sleepy Hollow State Park was developed as part of the State Lakes Project in the early 1960's. Other original area families were Tait, Wilson, Beckwith, Balcom, Price, Jorea, Crane, Reed, Mizga, Scott, Jones, Allen, Williams, Montague, Giffeis, Huyek, Chamberlain, Tisch, Underhill, Alwards, Hunt, Nicholas, Greene, Hill and Young. ,, The Dennison home was purchased by the Martin Family in 1941 who owned the land until the formation of the park. The actual structure of the Dennison School was moved to Alward Road next to Victor Township Hall where it is being restored by the Victor Township Historical Association. Part of this school's foundation can still be seen on these campsites. It was located on Centerline Road and is now the present location of campsites 83 and 85 in the North Campground. ,, The Dennison School opened in 1881 on land given by the neighboring Dennison Family, the one-room school house educated kindergarten through eighth grade in the rural tradition. It was sold and moved by an area resident. ,, The Grove School was located on the corner of Price Road and Shepardsville Road. Sleepy Hollow land included two one-room schoolhouses, the Grove School and the Dennison School. Crane, whose name is reminiscent of the fictional hero Ichabod Crane of the "Legend of Sleepy Hollow." , Instead, the name was chosen from one of the landowners, I.B. The Name, When it came time to decide the name of the park, a great debate arose between the cities of St. The west half of the park is open to snowmobiling in the winter if there is four or more inches of snow on the ground. Pets must be on a six foot leash (in and out of the water) and under an owner’s/handler’s immediate control at all times. Follow ‘Dog Beach’ signs from the main beach parking lot. Pet-Friendly Area: A section of pet-friendly shoreline is available 100 yards north of the Lake Ovid swimming beach.
Mountain Biking: More than 11 miles of trails are open for biking, mountain biking and hiking. Turkey, woodcock, pheasant, quail and grouse are also found in the park. The hunting is excellent for ducks, deer, rabbit and squirrel. Hunting: Park lands are open to hunting and trapping during the appropriate seasons. Hiking: There are more than 11 miles of hiking trails that take you through prairie grasses, hardwood forest and stands of pine trees.
Two fishing piers are available as well as access to various shore fishing sites. Lake Ovid has proven to be a very popular fishing lake with a wide variety of fish such as muskie, largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, rock bass, perch, catfish and bullheads. The bridle trails are maintained and managed by the Sleepy Hollow Trail Riders Association.
