If you call a beer a Pineapple IPA, I want to be able to taste the pineapple. The final Longshot beer is the employee winner, the Pineapple IPA. This is mild and a good way to get used to the flavor. It is easy to drink, and refreshing, and a really good beer if you’re interested in trying a smoked beer, but worried about going on all in. This is a light beer with just hints of smoke. A gratzer is an European style of beer, typically brewed with smoked wheat malt. Next up is the Longshot Gratzer, a 4.4 percent ABV beer. During the judges, this beer was universally chosen by all of the judges. This beer is spot on for the style, a lot of chocolate flavor, creamy and easy to drink. This year, I was a judge in the Longshot finals, so I had two of the beers before hand, but it was the first time I got to try it them in bottles.įirst up is the Longshot American Stout, a 7.2 percent ABV beer. The third beer is an employee winner chosen by fans at the Great American Beer Fest.
Each year, thousands of homebrewers enter a contest and two of the winners are picked to be included in a mixed six pack. Samuel Adams has recently released its latest Longshot mixed pack. Instead, you’re caught in a place in the middle that left me unsatisfied. They should have either added more hops, or used less. The Ogden almost tasted like a Belgian IPA that needed more hops rather than a tripel. It’s not a traditional tripel, and even though I love hops, the hops were misplaced in this beer. The Ogden is a dry-hopped Belgian-tripel, coming in at 9 percent ABV.
